Why Your Campfire Keeps Dying — And Why It Was Never Your Fault
Most fire starters are built to make a flame. Almost none of them are built to make a fire. There's a four-minute window where that difference decides your whole evening.
A few years ago my dad and I were at Kissimmee State Park, and I could not get a fire going.
Windy day. Stubborn wood. The kind of situation where you start quietly questioning every life choice that led you to be crouched in the dirt with a lighter and a fistful of nothing.

Go read the three-star reviews on any fire starter on Amazon. Not the one-stars — the three-stars. That's where honest people who wanted the product to work explain what actually happened.

This is a grown adult, writing a public review of a product that failed him, and he stops halfway through to volunteer that it was probably his fault. Nobody asked him to do that. He did it automatically.
I did the same thing at Kissimmee. Standing there in the wind, the thought in my head was not this product is badly designed. It was everybody else knows how to do this and I don't.
That reflex is the most expensive thing in this entire category. It keeps people buying the next box, and the next box, and never once asking the obvious question:
What if the product is doing exactly what it was designed to do — and what it was designed to do isn't enough?
Part Two
Wax Burns Itself
This is the part nobody explains, and once you see it you can't unsee it.
Almost every fire starter sold in America — the cubes, the squares, the plugs, the rolls, the firelighters in the orange box at the hardware store — runs on the same principle. There's a fuel, and that fuel is wax. Paraffin, usually. Sometimes wax and sawdust pressed together.
Wax is a great fuel for one very specific job: burning by itself, in a controlled way, for a set period of time.
That is literally what a candle is. And that's the problem.
A candle isn't trying to set anything else on fire. A candle is a closed system. It burns its own fuel, throws a modest amount of heat, and when the fuel is gone it stops.
A wax fire starter is a small, flat, aggressively-marketed candle.
It will light. It will always light — that part's easy, and that's the part in every video you've ever seen. It'll throw a nice flame for a few minutes. But it is not built to hand the fire off to anything. It's built to burn itself. And when it's done burning itself, if your wood hasn't caught, you have a scorch mark and nothing else.
That handoff — flame to wood — is the entire game. And there's a window where it has to happen.
Part Three
The Four-Minute Cliff
So how long is the window, really? Not as long as the box says. Here is what customers of the most heavily-advertised fire starter in the country report, in their own words:

Part Four
And Even When It Burns, It Hands You Off To Nothing
Here's the second half of the trap, and honestly it's worse than the burn time.
Say you get a full four minutes. Great. Four minutes of flame, sitting under — what?
Because the fire starter is not kindling. It's a starter. It assumes you already have a pile of dry, thin, ready-to-catch material sitting right there. And if you're camping in October, or in the Pacific Northwest, or after it rained Tuesday, or you just bought a bundle of green campground wood for eight dollars — you don't.

So there's a gap. On one side you have a flame. On the other side you have wood that needs to catch. And the entire fire starter industry has decided that bridging that gap is your problem.
Everyone sells you the flame. Nobody sells you what it's supposed to catch.
Part Five
What People Used Before Wax Existed
Here's the thing that actually bothered me: people have been starting fires for a very long time, and paraffin has been commercially available for about a hundred and sixty years of that. So what were they using before?
The answer, in North America, is the wood that stranger handed me.
When a pine tree dies — or gets damaged, or loses a limb — the tree floods the wound with resin. If the trunk or stump stays standing, that resin keeps concentrating in the heartwood. Not for a season. For decades. The water leaves, the resin stays, and eventually you get wood saturated with the most flammable substance the tree produces.
They called it lightwood. Fatlighter. Lighter knot. Pine knot. Fatwood.
My great-grandfather never bought a fire starter in his life. He owned a hatchet and he knew which stumps to look inside.
Part Six
Nobody Soaked It
Fatwood didn't disappear. You can buy it. There's a big brand on Amazon selling it by the ten-pound box, thousands of reviews, perfectly good product.
But go read their reviews and you find something strange. Here's a customer who gave them five stars:
"It does have a slight odor, but nothing to powerful. It's just what they soak the wood in to assist in igniting."

Nobody soaked it. The tree did the work.
That's the whole point of fatwood. That's the only point of fatwood. There is no accelerant. No treatment. No dip tank. The resin is already in the wood, because a tree spent thirty or forty years putting it there, and nobody has figured out how to speed that up — because you can't rush a tree.
The reason those five-star customers think it's treated is that they've never encountered a fire product in their lives that wasn't. Wax, petroleum, binders, accelerant — that's the entire category. So when they finally hold a piece of wood that lights like that, the only explanation available to them is that somebody must have put something in it.
Nobody did. Which made me stop thinking of this as a shopping problem and start thinking of it as a manufacturing one. Because if fatwood has been sitting there the whole time, working, requiring nothing — why did the entire industry replace it with wax?
I'll tell you exactly why, and it's not the reason you'd hope.
Part Seven
Wax Won Because Wax Is Cheap To Make
I kept expecting to find something more interesting than this. There isn't anything more interesting than this.
A wax fire starter can be made by the million. Melt paraffin — a petroleum byproduct, so it's already cheap — pour it into a mold with sawdust, let it set, stamp it out. The machine runs all night. Each unit costs pennies. It ships light, stacks flat, never varies, and has an unlimited supply chain.
A fatwood stick has to be cut out of a tree that spent thirty or forty years making the resin. You can't manufacture that. You can't accelerate it. You have to find pines that died the right way, in the right conditions, long enough ago — then cut and split and grade them, and every stick is a little different, because trees are.
So if you run a company that sells fire starters, and one option costs pennies and scales infinitely, and the other requires sourcing decades-old resin-loaded heartwood — that's not a hard call.
The category didn't switch to wax because wax works better. It switched because wax is easier to sell.
And the thing that got optimized away is precisely the thing that closes the gap. Because resin doesn't burn like wax. Resin burns the wood it's in. It doesn't hand off to the fuel. It is the fuel, and it's already attached to the fuel.
Once I understood that, I stopped trying to find a better fire starter and started trying to find better fatwood.
Part Eight
What I Ended Up Building
Fatwood is not all the same. Resin density depends on the species and on how long the wood sat. So I went looking for the densest material I could get consistently, and it wasn't in Florida.
It's Korean pine — Songmingzi — out of Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China. Brutal winters, slow-growing trees, stands of aged pine that have been concentrating resin for decades. Same reason people specify Japanese steel or Portuguese cork: it isn't about the country, it's that a particular material from a particular place has a property you can't get elsewhere.

The Honest List
- The match head is not water resistant. If you soak the match head, it will not strike. I'm not going to show you a video of one lighting in a downpour, because I'd be lying and you'd find out the first wet weekend you took them out.
- The fatwood blank does handle damp conditions. Resin doesn't care about moisture the way ordinary wood does — that's why it's been the wet-weather answer for two hundred years. The blank is genuinely useful when things are damp. The head needs to be dry to strike. Keep them in the bag they came in and you're fine.
- They smoke. Resin burns with visible smoke, sometimes dark for the first minute. That's not a defect — that's the fuel working. Anybody selling you a "smokeless" resin product is selling you something that isn't resin.
- You need a knife. Both methods — shaving and batoning — need a blade. If you don't carry one, these aren't the right product for you, and I'd rather you knew now than after the box arrives.
- Outdoor use only. Open flame. Not for indoors.
